I am Jacob Martella, and this is my sports blog. Currently, I am an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin and majoring in Journalism. Journalism has been my passion ever since fourth grade when my class put together a "class newspaper". It really wasn't much, but it sparked an interest and passion into the world of journalism. Since then, the passion has only grown and has flourished into my hopeful career path.
Throughout my time so far in learning to be a journalist, I've learned many skills. First and foremost, I've been able to hone in my writing skills. Writing has always been my first love and I make sure to dedicate time to keep improving how I write. More recently, I've become a solid web designer. I managed to learn HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript in a fairly short amount of time. This helped me design the WordPress theme for my arena football site, Arena Pigskin. Besides writing, this has become another one of my passions. I also now have photo editing skills with GIMP, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge, audio editing with Audacity and video editing with Final Cut Pro. I hope to continue to build on the skills as I go through my collegiate career.
As for my real-world experience, I've managed to get a good bit of experience so far in my journalism career. As a senior in high school, I was editor of my high school's newspaper and covered all of the sports, including going to basketball games. I was able to cover the UIL State Girl's Basketball tournament when our high school made it and was the only high school journalist there. Currently, I am on the staff of The Daily Texan as a beat writer for the Men's Golf team. As I mentioned before, I run an arena football site, writing news and feature stories, columns and previews and have built a solid readership base through the use of social media.
I'm always striving to get better and to push myself to make myself better. I hope this career path takes me on the ride of my life.
